As a business owner, you naturally want “your” employees to do what you want them to do. It’s your company, you have a vision and you pay the salaries. So you get to decide too, right? In practice, unfortunately, it often works differently. Maybe that’s even an advantage.
Apple top executive Steve Jobs: "There is no point in hiring smart people and telling them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell me how to do it."
Speaking out what you expect and especially why you expect it is incredibly important. It is also wise to have good job descriptions on paper so that you can also hold your employees accountable for (not) meeting expectations. Unfortunately, too often we experience business owners who have become conflicted over undefined work and performance agreements.
We recommend holding a performance review with your employees every year (for example, in mid-June), with the job description as the starting point. You properly record this conversation and have the employee sign for it as well. In addition to the performance appraisal interview, you also conduct an annual appraisal interview (for example, in mid-December). In this conversation, the extent to which the predetermined agreements and results were actually achieved is examined.
