Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion that will only return with the right guidance. With more than one million people in our country having (had) burnout, this is a major problem for both employers and employees. What is burnout?

In burnout, a person has gone beyond his or her limits for an extended period of time, resulting in total exhaustion. This is not normal fatigue, but complete exhaustion on both emotional and physical levels. Burnout makes it impossible to keep doing your daily tasks well, even sending an e-mail can be too much. You always feel tired and refueling over the weekend or going to bed early one night is no longer enough to recharge. Often burnout is perpetuated longer than necessary by feelings of fear and uncertainty: about your job, your health and how and why this happened to you. With the right burnout counseling, burnout does not last unnecessarily long.

How long does burnout last?

On average, burnout lasts nine months. Recovery without counseling takes from a year to several years. But by actively addressing the problem with burnout counseling, the chances of a quick recovery are greater. Sometimes it is possible to resume some simple work after only a few months.

Prevention is better than cure

So burnout symptoms are not gone one, two, three. Prevention, then, even in the case of burnout, is better than cure. By offering burnout counseling right from the first signs of stress or burnout, you prevent an employee from sitting at home for an unnecessarily long time.

What does our burnout counseling involve?

With our counseling, we start by looking for the cause of burnout. We then help your employee with effective counseling on both mental and physical levels with his/her recovery. Through talking, (outdoor) exercise and a plan for the future, we will help your employee make a smooth recovery. Burnout counseling is a key specialization within our sick leave services.

Returning to the workplace

An employee’s return to work is not the final stage of our burnout counseling, but only the beginning. The experience of burnout leads to important insights about personal boundaries. Identifying those limits better and making different choices in areas such as work and time management can prevent a second burnout in the future. This also sometimes leads to the realization that it is better to choose a different career.
